Luxe Backpack Trend Alert

Luxe Backpack Trend Alert

Among the many handbag trends for 2016/17 – from cross-body bags to “fanny bags”, top handle boxy bags and bucket bags to name but a few – the rucksack is my favourite. Once humble symbol of the budget traveller, it is the new brief-case, hand bag and holdall, rolled into one, according to the latest researches.

The backpack is back in force, back to stay, but not for school, running or hiking. The backpack trend on the catwalk has a different purpose: to show off.

Introducing the luxe backpack…. Furry (Michael Kors), with eyes (Anya Hindmarch) or with sequins (Versace), apparently this year you’ll have to hold your luxury backpack like a top handle bag, by the handle, forgetting the straps…. le backpack c’est chic!

The Pepe backpack by Steven Harkin doesn’t need fur, eyes or sequins to get the attention.

It just appears and all eyes are on it! Expect many compliments and comments both from women and men. It’s amazing how creative people are and come up with different analogies! From Star Trek space bag to beetle and pod I’ve heard it all!

It’s yummy mummies’ best friend – both hands are free! – and urban cyclists’ must have – tablet, phone, paperwork, pens and more all organized on the back, with style!

Designed to be ultra-organized as you move through ever-changing days, enabling you to travel light but with everything you need, to take you from the school run to the boardroom in style,” Sarah Joan Ross, Editor, Stylist for ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar and In Style.

“Practical but Chic, the Pepe backpack solves some of life’s problems, such as back pain and holding-toddler’s-hands-and-pram-or-shopping in the street while maintaining a fashionable look”.

“I am the proud and happy new owner of the wonderful Pepe. Having lusted after him for years, he is now mine! Red with black lining, and a place for everything, he is the perfect partner for every occasion. I normally cart around a big bag full of bits, but my Pepe will keep that under control with the perfect place for all I need but no more. He fits my sunnies, wallet, phone, iPad mini, umbrella, makeup, pens, reading glasses, notebook and novel and that’s it. What more could I want?

My sweetheart of a husband braved the horror of the shops to search out the perfect preside for my birthday and returned with Marc jacobs with its gold label and buckles. It took me a week to bring myself to tell him I really didn’t love it – and for the cost you should. It was mass produced and made in Vietnam and not very interesting. I returned it and for the same amount I have a hand-made artwork in the most beautiful materials and details, signed discreetly by the maker with a stamp to the inner. It is magnificent! And Adam agrees and now knows where to look for future choices, and he can do it online.

This bag is a keeper. You most definitely get what you pay for (and more) : a practical AND stunningly beautiful friend that you can take with you everyday everywhere., and to the envy of all (if that’s what you are into).”

Another Harkin backpack is the Jo. A larger bag spacious enough for a small laptop, with a bespoke aluminium handle. One of the bags purchased by Paris Museum of Fashion for their permanent collection.  The Flatpack is a men’s backpack, a contemporary take on the briefcase, great for bikers and business travellers.
